Political parties are crucial actors in modern representative democracies. As civil society organisms, they mediate society’s participation in politics. Internally, political parties can also be governed through the principles of internal democracy. But, to what extent are political parties in Albania democratic? Is this a domestic issue or belongs to the whole society?
In order to contribute with evidence on this main topic of current affairs, the Institute for Democracy and Mediation (IDM) has prepared a study on the intra-party democracy of the three main political parties in Albania, financed by the Hanns Seidel Foundation, office for Albania. The analysis focuses on internal documents of political parties, key events in their history and on data collected by focus groups and interviews which were organized with nearly 200 members of the three main parties in the country, during June – September 2022. This study is expected to serve public discourse, raise awareness of the importance of the intra-party democratization and inspire in-depth studies in this field.
This discussion will bring together scholars, representatives of political parties, civil society activists, media representatives and international partners to discuss the role and effects of internal party democracy in society and in public decision-making as a whole. The author of the publication, Dr.
Anjeza Xhaferaj will make the presentation of the study, which will be followed by the discussion of the panellists on the findings, recommendations and the phenomenon of intra-party democracy in Albania.
You are invited to join us in the discussion on November 22, 14:00 – 15:30, at the Xheko Imperial Hotel. The discussion will take place in person and also online on Zoom. It will be held in Albanian, with simultaneous translation in English
