This research study focuses on the three main political parties in Albania: Socialist Party, Democratic Party and Socialist Movement for Integration. Its aims to measure the Intra-Party Democracy (IPD) in these political parties in Albania and to explore the meaning that their party members attach to it. IPD is understood and broken down in categories and sub-categories so that parties in particular, and all interested actors in the field of political parties and democracy can understand, in which component of IPD parties are performing better and where they are performing worse.
Thus providing evidenced data and recommendations for improving IPD in political parties in Albania.
IPD is measured against two dimensions: inclusiveness and decentralization.
The analysis is based on both primary and secondary data. Content analyses of party statutes particularly focusses on measuring IPD, while focus groups with around 200 party members and interviews with high ranking officials of the political parties are used to explore the meaning that party members have on IPD, as well as validate content analysis findings.
