Report: Human Rights Defenders in the Western Balkans | November 2019

November 2019 – Over the last two decades, Albania has made significant progress in promoting and enforcing human rights and fundamental freedoms. Although human rights defenders have played an instrumental role in these achievements and the advancement of human rights, democracy and the rule of law, they are still experiencing undue restrictions and hardships that undermine their work.

This report highlights some of the main challenges human rights defenders in Albania and in the Western Balkan countries experience. It also provides some policy recommendations for improving the legal and institutional framework in order to ensure a more enabling environment, for all those who work to protect and promote human rights.
