Young Researchers Club (YRC)

1st meeting, 9 October 2014

The Young Researchers Club (YRC) was officially launched on 9 October 2014, in Tirana, Albania. This club is conceptualized in the form of an interactive forum, where the participants will have the opportunity to interact with peers, policy-makers and other relevant actors and stakeholders with regard to social science research advancement in the country.

Considering the young tradition of the social sciences research in Albania and the necessity to establish and develop a sustainable network between the field researchers, the YRC is perceived as an essential tool for sharing knowledge and experience.

This first event aimed at starting off this informal method of communication among young researchers in the field of social sciences in Albania as well as a bridging tool between the scientific research and the business world:  

IDM Participates in and Contributes to Belgrade Security Forum

It has turned to become a tradition now, the participation and contribution of IDM to the Belgrade Security Forum (BSF). It was the fourth BSF this year, which was held from 30 Sep - 2 Oct and focused mostly on specific security issues emerging from the recent developments in Ukraine and Levant. Some of the most prominent speakers were Mr. Alexander Vucic, Prime Minister of Serbia, Mr. Giuliano Amato (former Prime Minister of Italy) Mr. Franco Frattini (former Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs) etc. IDM contributed in this event, in a special side panel, by presenting some key findings and recommendations of the study on the “Albanian civilian capacities, available for peace operations in post-conflict countries”. The study, part of a regional project, aimed at mapping these capacities in some Western Balkan countries and supported by the the Royal Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Mr.

Conference on Regional Cooperation in the Field of Justice and Security

19 September 2014; Hotel Tirana International

With the support of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The Institute for Democracy and Mediation organized the conference on “Regional Cooperation in the Field of Justice and Security” at Hotel Tirana International on 19 September 2014. The event falls under the framework of the Security Research Forum: “Belgrade-Pristine-Tirana”, a three-year based joint initiative of three partner organizations: Belgrade Centre for Security Policy (BCSP), Kosovar Center for Security Studies (KCSS), and the Institute for Democracy and Mediation (IDM).

The conference aimed at analyzing the present level of cooperation in the field of justice and security between Albania and Serbia, in view of countries’ aspiration to joining the European Union.

Roundtable Discussion “Strengthening integrity of State Police”

A Round table Discussion organized by IDM on June 30th 2014 with Police reform stakeholders in Albania marks the conclusion of a 12-month research and assessment component of the project "Strengthening Integrity of State Police" on which basis two pillars – Technical Assistance and Information and Advocacy – will be additionally implemented by the end of 2014.

Round Table on the Law on Private Security Companies

The Institute for Democracy and Mediation, Tirana (IDM) in cooperation with the Parliamentary Committee on National Security of Albania (PCNS) organized on 11 July 2014, at Hotel Grand, Tirana, a round table concerning the Law on Private Security Companies (PSCs), submitted by the Council of Ministers to the Parliament for adoption. This event organized by IDM, is the fifth one, as part of a project supported by Geneva Centre for Democratic Control of the Armed Forces (DCAF) focused on and providing expertise in strengthening of the effective parliamentary oversight and control over the Security Sector in Albania.

Round Table on the Draft Law “On the National Security Strategy of the Republic of Albania”

The Institute for Democracy and Mediation, Tirana (IDM) in cooperation with the Parliamentary Committee on National Security of Albania (PCNS) organized on 18 July 2014, at Hotel Grand, Tirana, a round table, concerning the draft law “On the National Security Strategy of the Republic of Albania” (NSS) which the Council of Ministers has recently submitted to the Parliament for adoption. This event organized by IDM, is the sixth one, part of a project supported by Geneva Centre for Democratic Control of the Armed Forces (DCAF) focused on and providing expertise in strengthening of the effective parliamentary oversight and control over the security sector in Albania.

On 10 April 2014, the Kosovar Centre for Security Studies (KCSS) Belgrade Centre for Security Policy (BCSP) and Institute for Democracy and Mediation (IDM), organized a public event in Prishtina, as part of the 5th meeting of the Security Research Forum: “Belgrade-Prishtina-Tirana”.

The conference launched the first public analysis on the progress and challenges to the integration of Serbian police officers in Kosovo Police as part of the Brussels Agreement. The research paper was a concrete outcome of the fruitful collaboration between two independent think tanks - Belgrade Centre for Security Policy and Kosovar Center for Security Studies.

Security Aspects of Normalization of Belgrade-Prishtina-Tirana Relations

On 27 June 2014, Institute for Democracy and Mediation (IDM), Kosovar Center for Security Studies (KCSS) and Belgrade Center for Security Policy (BCSP) organized a public event in Belgrade, as part of the 6th meeting of the Security Research Forum: “Belgrade-Prishtina-Tirana”.

The conference focused on the “Security Aspects of Normalization of Belgrade-Prishtina-Tirana Relations” and especially on the role of police in this process and the implementation of the overall security aspect of such process.

Round Table on Draft Laws on Defense

With the support of the Geneva Center for Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF), IDM organized a round table on the new package of three draft laws on defense at Grand Hotel on 4 June 2014. The round table brought together parliamentarians, representatives from the Ministry of Defense, civil society, media, etc. with the purpose of exchanging opinions and expertise regarding these draft laws and their further improvements.
