Western Balkans as a Security Community – Presentation in UNY & UT

Presentation- 21 May 2013 - Universitety of New York - Tiranë

 

IDM researchers Arjan Dyrmishi and Mariola Qesaraku, engaged in the research project  "Western Balkans as a Security Community - Practices from Diplomats"  in the framework of the meeting with master students of the Universities in Tirana, conducted the second presentation with the students of the University of New York in Tirana. This meeting follows the presentation conducted last week with the students of the University of Tirana.

VTC with the young Moldovan Security Researchers

Following the newly established partnership between the Albanian Institute for Democracy and Mediation (IDM) and Moldovan (NATO focused) Information and Documentation Centre (IDC-NATO) a video-teleconference (VTC) was conducted on 23 April 2013.actually implementing a project aiming to develop NATO related expertise among young national security experts. The overall impact of the project is to stimulate the interest regarding NATO’s events and activities among Moldovan’s young scholars. One of the areas intended to be covered during this project was the relation between security and economy, and (particularly) how specific security options influence the economy.

Weekend Public Lectures: Advocacy and Strategic Communication

Following the previous lecture on evidence-based policy research, the lecture series “The world of think tanks” focused on think tanks advocacy tools and strategic communication. In this context, Mr. Arbjan Mazniku (Agenda Institute) was invited to address the topic of advocacy tools and strategies of think tanks in order to influence decision-making process. Moreover, Mr. Besnik Baka (IDM) held a presentation on the think tanks strategic communication and the channels on how to promote think tanks policy products. Throughout the lectures, the participants discussed and shared their experiences on advocacy and think tanks PR strategies.

The second session of weekend lectures: “The world of think tanks” was dedicated to evidence-based policy research and the importance of data in this process. The lecturers were delivered by Ms. Maria do Carmo Gomes (ILO Chief Technical Adviser) and Ms. Aranita Brahaj (Open Data Albania). 

The World of Think Tanks: Opening Session

The fourth edition of the weekend lectures “The World of think tanks” was launched on 30th March, 2013 at IDM premises. This edition we have selected 35 participants that will attend the 12 lectures until June 2013. They are highly motivated graduate, postgraduate students and young professionals coming from various educational background mainly social sciences, economy and law.

The Institute for Democracy and Mediation held the panel debate "Challenges beyond Visa Liberalization: Asylum Seekers and Illegal Migration” in Hotel Tirana International on March 15, 2013. The panel discussed the findings of IDM's corresponding study report, which analyses reasons and factors beyond the growth in number of asylum requests in EU countries and the measures undertaken by the Albanian government to tackle these phenomena.

IDM Center for European & Security Affairs, for the second consecutive year, has analyzed the work of the Albanian Parliamentary Committees on European Integration (PCEI) and on National Security (PCNS) in 2012.

The monitoring has analyzed the performance of both parliamentary Committees by focusing particularly on the comprehensiveness of parliamentary scrutiny, proactive engagement of MPs, formal procedures, cooperation with the Executive, involvement of civil society and other non-state actors etc.

The International Conference: Perspectives of regional cooperation for Northern Kosovo in the Regional Cooperation Perspective, was held on January 11 – 13, 2013, at Hotel "Splendid" in Bečići, Montenegro. This International Conference constituted a one-day event attended by prominent international and regional decision makers, public opinion makers and experts engaged in interethnic dialogue and negotiation, including Serbian – Albanian dialogue.

Institute  for Democracy and Mediation in cooperation with with Belgrade Centre for Security Policy  (www.bezbednost.org) and Kosovo Centre for Security Studies (www.qkss.org) with the support of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, organized the first Security Research Forum Belgrade – Tirana – Prishtina: Resolving the Security Dilemmas in the Western Balkans, with the participation of well-known personalities in the field of policymaking, diplomacy civil society and media.

The Regional Centre for Security Cooperation (RACVIAC) Rakitje, Zagreb, organized the Conference titled: “Promoting Security Strategies and Emerging Policy Priorities in SEE”. It was organized as a three-day event, from 03 to 05 December 2012, gathering a total of 51 participants: senior decision-making officials and experts from the relevant ministries dealing with the event topic.
