Surveys and Research Studies

 

In congruence with its programs, IDM has continually developed surveys of public opinion and of focused groups.

 

• IDM in July-August 2002 conducted a survey of public opinion about citizen’s participation in governance and decision-making and public perceptions about the local government. Questionnaires were distributed to structured samples of citizens in five cities of the country. The conclusions of the survey were published in a book, “For an active community in governance”, which was distributed to units of local government, NGOs, academic institutions and international organizations working in Albania.
• In 2002 IDM was part of the team commissioned by the Albanian office of UNDP to conduct a national survey about the civil sector. The results of the survey were published by UNDP office as Civil Society Partnership Statement 2002, containing practical information on civil society organizations, their functions, contributions and shortcomings.
• In 2005 IDM was commissioned by South Eastern Europe Clearinghouse for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SEESAC)/ Saferworld / International Alert to conduct a survey on the situation of the private security companies in Albania, in the framework of a comparative study “Small Arms and Light Weapons and Private Security Companies in South Eastern Europe: A Cause or Effect of Insecurity?” (www.seesac.org/reports/psc.pdf).
• In 2006 IDM, as a local partner of Geneva Center for Democratic Control of the Armed Forces undertook a survey about the governance of the Armed Forces, State Police, Border Police and Intelligence Service in Albania, in the framework of a comparative study in SEE.
• In May-June 2005, IDM in cooperation with the Police Academy in Tirana and students of Social Sciences, University of Tirana, conducted a survey on “Community Policing – Realities and Challenges”. This survey was focused in 4 Tirana police commissariats and other 5 Municipalities. It had 4 focus groups namely: police officers, community, business community and high school pupils and teachers. The scope of this pilot survey was to make an evaluation of the real situation as far as the impact of community policing oriented projects has had in the public and police. This survey was presented and discussed in IV National Conference “Public Trust a Challenge to the Police”, published and distributed in all police commissariats all over the country. (the survey)
• During July-August 2006, IDM worked with students of Police Academy carried out a national survey on “Citizen’s perception and satisfaction on police services”. The survey took place in 10 out of 12 country Prefectures, respectively in Tirana, Durres, Shkoder, Lezhe, Elbasan, Korca, Fier (Lushja), Berat, Vlore, Gjirokaster, Close to 900 questionnaires were applied. The detailed processed results of the survey were sent to the Minister of Interior and General Police Director and other central and local structures of State Police. The results of this survey were presented publicly at a press conference and were also discussed separately with officials and police officers of Tirana Police Directorate.(the survey)
